Common Summertime Foot Problems

The summer heat and long days can contribute to a number of problems for the feet. Some of these summertime threats include athlete’s foot and other fungal infections, cracked heels, blisters, and more. The increased activity in the summer also tends to mean more foot injuries and inflammation. Let’s look at some ways to protect your feet from these foot troubles.

Clean and Sanitize Your Feet After Walking Barefoot

Summertime is almost synonymous with swimming time, and many people head out to the beach, pools, or spas when things heat up. Make the most of the summer but remember that fungal infections thrive in warm and moist environments. Even if you’re not out by the water, walking barefoot can expose your feet to microbes, germs, and bacteria. Wash your feet with warm water and soap, and change into clean, dry socks after your time outside.

Keep Your Feet Moisturized and Protected

If you want healthy feet, then get in the habit of moisturizing them. This is especially important during the hot summer when your feet can dry out before you know it. That dryness combined with friction of the feet can lead to cracked heels and even bleeding. Make moisturizing your feet a part of your routine!

Applying sunscreen should also be a ritual before going out, as it protects your skin from sunburn, skin cancer, and premature aging. Sadly, feet are often overlooked when applying sunscreen. Show your feet some love and give it a coat of sunscreen when you decide to go with the slippers or sandals.

Wear Proper Fitting Shoes

Shoes that are too tight or loose, or shoes that don’t fit the shape and size of your foot can cause discomfort and pain. Wearing ill-fitting shoes can lead to problems ranging from irritations to serious injuries, including blisters, calluses, ingrown toenails, and inflammation as well as foot sprains, strains, and fractures. Wear proper-fitting shoes that provide the right support for your unique feet.

How Can a Licensed Podiatrist Help?

It is advised to visit a healthcare professional to address any chronic or severe foot problems. A podiatrist, also known as a doctor of podiatric medicine or foot doctor, specializes in foot and ankle problems. They are educated and trained to prescribe medications, order and interpret diagnostics, and provide both conservative and surgical treatments for a wide range of conditions. Call Podiatry Centers of Maryland to find a licensed podiatrist in the area and schedule an appointment.
